Tottenham defender Micky van de Ven has said that sacking Ange Postecoglou as manager was a strange decision by the club.
Recall that the Australian was recently fired despite ending the club’s 17-year trophy drought.
Reacting during an interview with Voetbal Zone, Van de Ven shared that it was the club’s decision to dismiss Ange, and the players had little to say about it.
According to him, the fact that Ange Postecoglou was the first Spurs coach to win a trophy after a very long time makes the decision a strange one, but what is done is done.
“That was ultimately a choice from the club. We, as players, have little to say about that. Of course, he is the first coach in a long time who has won a trophy and had success at Spurs. So if you look at it that way, it is of course a strange choice,” he said.
Referencing reports of Thomas Frank coming in to take over as Tottenham coach, the centre-back revealed that the club will have to work towards a brighter future henceforth.
“It is a choice from the club about which we have little to say, so we will see what happens now. Of course, we see some rumours about the Brentford head coach [Thomas Frank], who it will probably be. So yes, a choice from the club about which we have little to say,” the defender said.
The Netherlands international further noted that he and his teammates got along with Ange well, stressing that he definitely had a winning mentality.
He concluded by saying that even though the club’s EPL form was poor last season, there were other factors responsible for the bad results.
“I think many of the players got along with [Postecoglou] well. And of course, what I say, he is the first coach who has brought success to Spurs in a long time. That also shows that he has a certain quality. That also means that he has a winning mentality, 100%.
From that, you would of course say that it is strange that he was fired. What we have shown in the Premier League is, of course, unacceptable. That would, of course, have multiple factors, but that would not only have been the coach,” he added.
