“If You Don’t Leave, We’ll Remove You” – UK Home Office Warns Foreign Students

The UK Home Office has threatened to remove foreign students and their families from the country if they refuse to leave.

In a direct warning sent to approximately 130,000 students via email and text messages, the office said, “If you submit an asylum claim that lacks merit, it will be swiftly and robustly refused… If you have no legal right to remain in the UK, you must leave. If you don’t, we will remove you.”

Such direct communication is happening for the first time as the United Kingdom aims to address concerns over overstaying visa holders, particularly those using asylum claims to extend their stay.

The warning comes amid the worrying rise in asylum claims submitted by foreign students whose visas have expired. As of June 2025, about 16,000 asylum applications have been lodged by individuals who initially got into the country with student visas – almost a sixfold increase compared to 2020, research has revealed.

In total, these education-related asylum claims made up a major portion of all such claims: out of 41,100 legal-entry asylum applications, a huge chunk of the ratio were from students.

According to the UK Home Secretary, Yvette Cooper, even though the country supports genuine refugees, unmerited asylum claims will not be accepted, and individuals who do not have a legal right to remain in the UK must leave as soon as possible.

Amid increasing public and political concern over immigration, opposition figures have been advocating for a national migration emergency. However, the Home Office prefers “practical and sensible” reforms to manage immigration the right way.

The government’s stance will affect universities as well. Institutions where fewer than 95% of foreign students start courses or fewer than 90% complete them might face sanctions, including possibly losing their right to fund foreign students.

On top of that, visa applicants from nations that regularly overstay, especially Pakistan, Nigeria, and Sri Lanka, might face more stern scrutiny, including financial checks and deeper background investigations.

What Foreign Students And Institutions Should Know:

  1. If your visa expired and you have no legal status, be prepared to leave, or you’ll be removed.
  2. Asylum claims submitted without genuine grounds will be rejected immediately, and support will be restricted.
  3. Universities should expect penalties if compliance rates reduce; therefore, they are expected to monitor and support their students effectively.
  4. Applicants from high-risk nations should expect sterner vetting.
