The Federal Government has received 180 Nigerians who returned from Libya under a voluntary return programme coordinated by the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) in collaboration with the Nigerian government.
The returnees, including 37 children and infants, arrived at the Cargo Terminal of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Ikeja, Lagos, at about 4:20 p.m. on Tuesday.
The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) disclosed the development in a statement issued on Tuesday and shared on its official X account on Wednesday.
According to the agency, the returnees travelled from Sebha, Libya, aboard an Air Buraq Airlines flight with registration number 5A-BAE.
NEMA said the group comprised 143 adults, 26 children and 11 infants.
The adults included 75 men and 68 women, while the children comprised 12 boys and 14 girls. The 11 infants consisted of three boys and eight girls.
The agency’s Lagos Operations Office received the returnees in collaboration with the National Commission for Refugees, Migrants and Internally Displaced Persons.
As part of efforts to ensure their safe arrival and proper reintegration into society, the returnees received immediate assistance from relevant government agencies and partner organisations.
NEMA explained that the Nigeria Immigration Service conducted biometric registration and documentation to establish the identities of the returnees and maintain accurate records for their reintegration process.
The agency added that food, drinking water and medical screening were provided to the returnees upon arrival.
It also said ambulance services were made available for those requiring medical attention, while officials provided luggage handling, logistical assistance and counselling.
According to NEMA, the returnees also received reintegration support to help them settle back into their respective communities and resume their lives in Nigeria.
The agency stressed that the exercise involved cooperation among relevant government institutions and other partners to ensure that the Nigerians returned safely and were treated with dignity.
NEMA added that the voluntary return programme was designed to provide immediate assistance to Nigerians coming back from Libya and support their transition into their communities.
The return of the 180 Nigerians highlights ongoing efforts by the Federal Government and international partners to assist citizens who wish to return home from abroad through voluntary migration programmes.
