Super cop Parry Benjamin Osemwegie Osayande, who was responsible for the arrest of notorious armed robber, Anini, and his gang members, is dead. Benjamin Osemwegie (September 29, 1936 – September 28, 2025) was a Deputy Inspector General of Police.
The deceased served as the former Bendel state’s police commissioner during the Anini incident, which terrorised Nigeria in the 1980s.
As the defunct Bendel state’s police commissioner, Benjamin oversaw the arrest and execution of the deadly armed robber Lawrence Anini.
Reacting to the sad news, Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, described the late Osayande as a distinguished officer whose service to the Force and the country was marked by his professionalism, accountability, and bravery.
He then extended condolences to the Osayande family, the Police Service Commission, and colleagues of the deceased.
“The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbtokun, Ph.D, NPM, on behalf of the officers and men of the Nigeria Police Force, commiserates with the family, the Police Service Commission, and associates of the late DIG Osayande, and pays tribute to his invaluable contributions to policing and internal security in Nigeria.
The Nigeria Police Force prays for the peaceful repose of his soul and strength for his family to bear this irreparable loss,” he said.
Recall that notorious Anini murdered several innocent Nigerians and avoided arrest until the Nigeria Police Force sent Parry Benjamin Osemwegie Osayande, who is also a Benin man, to capture him.
Weeks later, Benjamin Osemwegie got Anini arrested alongside a high-ranking police officer who was supplying his weapons.
DIG Parry Osayande Rtd died one day before his 89th birthday.
May his soul rest in peace.
