A Kenyan court has ordered the arrest and extradition of a British national accused of murdering 21-year-old Agnes Wanjiru in 2012, a case that has lingered for over a decade and ignited calls for justice in Kenya and beyond.

Justice Alexander Muteti of the Nairobi High Court ruled this week that there was “probable cause” to arrest the suspect, a United Kingdom citizen, linked to Wanjiru’s death in Nanyuki, a town hosting the British Army Training Unit Kenya (BATUK). The suspect, whose identity has not been publicly disclosed, is expected to face extradition proceedings.

Wanjiru, a young hairdresser and mother, was last seen on March 31, 2012, in the company of British soldiers at the Lion’s Court Lodge, a popular hangout for troops stationed in the garrison town. Two months later, her body was discovered in a septic tank near the hotel, with evidence suggesting she was stabbed and beaten before being dumped while still alive.

The case resurfaced in 2021 after a Sunday Times investigation revealed that the soldier, referred to as “Soldier X,” had confessed to colleagues about killing Wanjiru and even showed them where her body was hidden. Despite this, no arrests were made for years, fuelling anger among residents and her grieving family.

“While this is progress, it is not justice yet,” said Esther Muchiri, a spokesperson for Wanjiru’s family, who have long accused authorities of dragging their feet.

The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) confirmed that extradition proceedings would now begin to ensure the suspect faces trial in Kenya. The case is set to return to court on October 21, 2025.

If carried out, it would mark the first time a serving or former British soldier is extradited to face trial abroad for the murder of a civilian.

The British High Commission in Kenya has pledged cooperation, with a government spokesperson reiterating: “Our thoughts remain with the family of Agnes Wanjiru, and we remain absolutely committed to helping them secure justice.”

The tragedy left Wanjiru’s then-infant daughter, now 13, to be raised by her grandmother and aunt, as the family continues to fight for closure after years of delay.
