The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) achieved a historic milestone in 2025, transmitting a record peak of 5,801.84 megawatts (MW) on March 4, even as the company grappled with 131 cases of infrastructure vandalism throughout the year
TCN’s Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Engr Sule Ahmed Abdulaziz, announced the achievement in his end-of-year address to staff, partners and stakeholders, calling 2025 “a remarkable and historic year” for the company and Nigeria’s power sector.
The March 4 transmission peak represented the highest electricity generation ever delivered on the national grid, with maximum daily energy delivery reaching 128,370.75 megawatt-hours (MWh) nationwide that day.
Abdulaziz credited the record performance to targeted investments in infrastructure rehabilitation, expanded transformer capacity and consistent maintenance of transmission assets across the network. These improvements have increased TCN’s wheeling capacity to 8,700MW, better positioning the company to meet Nigeria’s growing electricity demand.
Between January 2024 and November 2025, TCN commissioned 82 new power transformers, adding more than 8,500 megavolt-amperes (MVA) to the national grid.
Despite these gains, Abdulaziz acknowledged that infrastructure vandalism continues to threaten grid stability. The 131 vandalism incidents recorded between January and November 2025 across TCN’s network represent an ongoing challenge for the company.
TCN is collaborating with the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA), security agencies and community vigilante groups to combat the problem. “We will continue to intensify sensitization campaigns and community engagement efforts to safeguard our critical infrastructure,” Abdulaziz said.
The TCN chief also highlighted significant sector reforms in 2025, including the unbundling of TCN and the successful launch of the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO).
The company is advancing several donor-funded projects worth over $1.16 billion, including the Abuja Feeding Scheme, which involves constructing five new substations and a 330kV transmission line.
Abdulaziz praised TCN staff for their dedication and commitment, describing them as the company’s greatest asset. For 2026, he pledged to intensify efforts to increase grid capacity, stability and efficiency while strengthening collaboration with NISO and other sector stakeholders.
He thanked President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Minister of Power Chief Adebayo Adelabu, security agencies and development partners for their support, and offered condolences to families of staff members who died in 2025.
