Former NBA Vice President Defends Controversial Treatment of Actor Pedro Obaseki, Sparks Outrage

John Aikpokpo-Martins, a former First Vice President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), has stirred significant controversy following his public defense of the harsh treatment inflicted on Nigerian actor Dr. Don Pedro Obaseki by individuals reportedly representing the Benin Traditional Council.

In a Facebook statement, the senior lawyer appeared to justify actions that numerous Nigerians and human rights groups have condemned as mob justice. Aikpokpo-Martins argued that democratic freedoms and freedom of expression do not authorize anyone to disrespect Edo cultural traditions or the esteemed Benin monarchy.

His remarks follow widespread public anger over disturbing video footage showing Obaseki being stripped to his underwear, forced to kneel, and publicly humiliated at the Benin Palace premises. The actor was reportedly labeled an “Oghionoba”—described as an enemy of the Oba of Benin, Oba Ewuare II.

While critics have called for accountability regarding what they characterize as assault, illegal detention, and public degradation, the former NBA official adopted a contrasting position.

“Yes, this is democracy. However, that does not give anyone, particularly an Edo man the right to attempt to ridicule and desecrate our centuries-old traditions simply because there is freedom of expression,” Aikpokpo-Martins stated.

He issued a warning against what he termed “renegades” attempting to impose “unbecoming bravado shamelessness” on Edo society, emphasizing that reverence for tradition and elders should supersede individual expression.

“We are Edo and we respect traditions and elders… Who do anyhow may see anyhow,” he declared, adding unapologetically: “You may not agree with me, but I have no apologies for anyone.”

His statements have generated substantial criticism across legal circles, civil society, and social media platforms. Many Nigerians have expressed dismay that a senior legal practitioner and former NBA leader would seemingly rationalize extrajudicial punishment.
