A NASA spacecraft carrying four astronauts has successfully returned to Earth, splashing down in the Pacific Ocean on Friday after completing a landmark around the Moon.
The crew Christina Koch, Victor Glover, Jeremy Hansen, and Reid Wiseman were quickly received by recovery teams and transported to a U.S. Navy vessel for routine medical checks.
Following re-entry, mission commander Wiseman confirmed the team’s condition, saying communications were clear and the crew remained stable. Reflecting on the journey, he described the mission as remarkable.
Despite the success, the Artemis II mission has been overshadowed by a wave of online misinformation. False claims circulating on social media platforms suggested the lunar fly-by was staged, with some alleging the footage was created using artificial intelligence or filmed in a studio.
One widely shared image falsely appeared to show astronauts in front of a green screen, but experts identified it as digitally manipulated content. Another viral clip misinterpreted a visual glitch — later explained as a broadcast overlay error — as evidence of fabrication.
Unverified claims also surfaced about mysterious objects on the Moon, further fueling speculation.
Experts say such conspiracy theories are gaining traction due to growing distrust in institutions and the rapid spread of misleading content online. According to misinformation researcher Mike Rothschild, major scientific milestones often become easy targets for conspiracy narratives, especially when individuals position themselves as alternative “experts.”
The situation has also revived long-standing doubts about the Apollo 11 Moon Landing, with some falsely claiming it was staged — a theory widely debunked by scientists.
Analysts note that the rise of accessible AI tools has made it easier to question genuine achievements, a phenomenon sometimes referred to as the “liar’s dividend,” where real evidence is dismissed as fake.
Misinformation expert Timothy Caulfield explained that conspiracy theories often appeal to people because they create a sense of “hidden knowledge.”
However, space experts emphasize that the Artemis II mission offers clear proof of human capability, with stunning images and videos captured during the journey reinforcing the reality of the achievement.
The mission marks a significant step forward in human space exploration, demonstrating that crewed lunar travel remains possible decades after earlier missions.
