Authorities in Ogun State have taken into custody the driver of the vehicle transporting former world heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua during a fatal road accident that claimed two lives.
Oluseyi Babaseyi, spokesperson for the Ogun State Police Command, confirmed the development in a statement released Thursday. “The driver of the Lexus SUV is currently in custody in connection with the accident case involving Anthony Joshua. Investigations are ongoing,” Babaseyi stated.
Police are working to establish the complete details of the incident and assess potential responsibility for the crash. The driver’s identity has not been made public at this time.
The December 29, 2025 accident resulted in the deaths of two of Joshua’s close associates—Sina Ghami and Latif “Latz” Ayodele. Joshua, who sustained injuries in the crash, was released from hospital after medical personnel determined he was stable enough to continue recuperating at home.
According to a joint statement from the Lagos and Ogun state governments, the British-Nigerian boxer remains deeply affected by the tragedy. “He is heavy hearted and full of emotions over the loss of his two close friends,” the statement noted.
The announcement, jointly signed by Gbenga Omotoso, Lagos State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, and Kayode Akinmade, Special Adviser on Information and Strategy for Ogun State, revealed that Joshua and his mother visited a Lagos funeral home on Wednesday to pay final respects to the deceased. Arrangements were underway for the repatriation of the bodies that same evening.
Both state governments extended their sympathies, stating: “We pray The Almighty grant the repose of their souls whilst granting their families and loved ones the fortitude to bear this very sad and painful loss.”
The statement also acknowledged support from Nigeria’s leadership during this difficult period. Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun and Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu expressed gratitude for public solidarity and specifically thanked President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his support throughout the ordeal.
Medical staff at Lagoon Hospital in Ikoyi, where Joshua and other injured individuals received treatment, were commended for their professional care and dedication
