The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State has formally opposed impeachment proceedings initiated against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, calling the action “untenable” and cautioning against disrupting state governance.
The Rivers State House of Assembly recently launched impeachment proceedings against the governor, with Speaker Martins Amaewhule accusing Fubara of gross misconduct and calling his administration a “mistake.”
However, in a statement by party spokesperson Darlington Nwauju, the APC leadership expressed strong reservations about the legislative action.
“While we recognize the legislature’s independence and constitutional oversight role, we firmly reject resorting to impeachment against our governor and deputy governor,” the party stated.
The APC characterized the current tensions as remnants of internal conflicts from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) that should not be allowed to disrupt the now-APC government.
Addressing budget-related concerns central to the impeachment threat, the party noted that during the emergency rule period, a ₦1.485 trillion budget was approved for Rivers State, covering the period through August 2026. The APC pointed out that the constitution permits governors a six-month spending window into new fiscal years, suggesting supplementary budgets may not be necessary.
“We strongly urge all Rivers State House of Assembly members, particularly APC lawmakers, to resist external pressures aimed at destabilizing Governor Fubara’s administration,” the statement read.
The party pledged to protect its government from internal discord and called on assembly members to halt impeachment proceedings to preserve the state’s development trajectory and democratic integrity.
“Let our state remain a democracy and not a politicocracy,” the APC concluded.
