Three medical personnel at a Kano State government hospital have been suspended following the death of a patient who allegedly had surgical scissors left inside her body during an operation.
The Kano State Hospital Management Board confirmed that Aishatu Umar died after undergoing surgery at the Abubakar Imam Urology Center, a government-owned facility. A preliminary investigation verified that the incident took place at the center.
Dr. Mansur Mudi Nagoda, the board’s Executive Secretary, announced through spokesperson Samira Suleiman that the three staff members have been immediately removed from clinical duties. The case has been forwarded to the Kano State Medical Ethical Committee for further review and potential disciplinary measures.
“Following a preliminary and transparent investigation ordered by the Executive Secretary, the Board has established that the unfortunate incident involving the late Aishatu Umar did occur at the Abubakar Imam Urology Center,” the statement read.
The board emphasized its dedication to maintaining accountability and patient safety, noting that the suspended personnel are barred from clinical activities pending the outcome of the ethics committee’s investigation, which will proceed according to established laws and professional standards.
In an official statement, the Hospital Management Board expressed condolences to Umar’s family and assured the public of its zero-tolerance policy toward medical negligence.
“The Board reassures the public that it will not condone negligence in any form and will continue to take decisive actions to safeguard the lives, dignity, and trust of patients across all state health facilities,” officials stated.
The board pledged to strengthen oversight mechanisms and enforce professional standards to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
The incident has generated significant public outcry and raised questions about safety protocols at government healthcare facilities in the state.
