The Fusegbuwa Ruling House of Ijebu-Ode has announced that a new Awujale will be selected within the next month, following the completion of the nomination process for candidates seeking the vacant throne.
Otunba Abdul-Lateef Owoyemi, Olori Ebi of the Fusegbuwa Ruling House, made this disclosure during the nomination meeting held in Ijebu-Ode. He expressed confidence that the ancient town would soon have a new monarch to occupy the prestigious stool.
The Awujale throne has remained vacant since July 13, 2025, when Oba Sikiru Adetona, who ruled for 65 years, passed away.
Owoyemi outlined the selection timeline, explaining that following the nomination and submission of candidates’ names, the kingmakers would review the list and forward their chosen candidate to the government for final approval.
“We have successfully nominated 95 candidates today in a peaceful and harmonious process, 95 princes and princesses who expressed interest in the throne. A 19-day window is now open for anyone with grievances to come forward. After that, the kingmakers will perform their duties and select one candidate for us,” Owoyemi said.
He emphasized that the ruling house had conducted extensive traditional consultations, including oracle divinations, to guide the selection process. “We have no doubt that the kingmakers will select the person appointed by Almighty God and blessed by our ancestors,” he added.
Owoyemi assured that the process would be free of conflict, stating that even unsuccessful candidates would have opportunities to serve in the palace. “This is a win-win situation for everyone. There will be no litigation, and by God’s grace, we will all be happy with the outcome,” he said.
He also expressed confidence in the government’s role, stating: “We trust the government will support the family’s choice and be guided to select the best person for us. We know they will make the right decision.”
