Former Manchester United captain Roy Keane has commended the club’s resurgence under Michael Carrick following their thrilling 3-2 win against Arsenal, yet maintains the interim boss lacks the credentials for the permanent position.
During Sky Sports’ post-match coverage on Sunday, Keane recognized United’s improved showings while tempering expectations about Carrick’s suitability for the long-term role.
“Two excellent displays, but stringing together a couple of victories doesn’t tell the whole story,” Keane remarked.
“Even with a perfect record through the season’s end, I wouldn’t hand him the permanent position. He hasn’t demonstrated he’s the right fit for this challenge.”
Keane emphasized United’s need for a manager with a track record of championship success.
“The club requires someone with greater stature and proven ability. Given United’s magnitude and the obstacles ahead, you need a manager capable of delivering league championships.
“Can we genuinely see Michael Carrick bringing those titles back to Old Trafford? That’s the standard, and I’m not persuaded he meets it.”
Nevertheless, Keane lauded United’s Emirates Stadium performance, noting their assurance and effective use of substitutes.
He observed, “Given their recent struggles, they displayed confidence and control in their approach.
“Two outstanding goals and meaningful contributions from the bench. Watching the United supporters celebrate felt reminiscent of better times.
“Carrick deserves recognition. Two exceptional performances showcasing genuine class.”
Former United defender Gary Neville echoed these sentiments, supporting Carrick’s continuation until season’s end before transitioning to elite management.
“They competed with proper intensity. Carrick should finish the season, then pass responsibilities to someone like Tuchel or Ancelotti—managers operating at that elite level.”
Carrick, who assumed interim duties after Ruben Amorim’s departure, downplayed rising expectations surrounding his tenure.
He explained, “We’re barely 10 days in, so perfection wasn’t realistic. We couldn’t expect immediate dominance at the Emirates. This is just the foundation—we’ll build from here over the coming weeks.”
Carrick praised his squad and staff’s dedication, highlighting the team’s unity and squad depth as positive indicators.
“There’s genuine collective spirit. When everything clicks and we can share those moments with our supporters, that matters enormously. This result represents significant progress.”
