Over 600 widows of fallen military personnel and 20 physically challenged veterans received relief materials through the Nigerian Legion, Lagos State Council, following a donation from Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.
The distribution took place on Tuesday at the Multi-Agency Office Complex Hall in Oshodi during the Lagos Legion Day celebration. Recipients received bags of rice, educational supplies, and cash grants.
Members of the Widows of Military Fallen Heroes Association and the Military Widows Association thanked the Nigerian Legion for facilitating the governor’s assistance. Physically challenged and elderly ex-servicemen also praised the Lagos Legion Council Chairman, Mr Akeem Wolimoh, for ensuring everyone was included in the distribution.
Lt-Gen Waidi Shaibu, the Chief of Army Staff, represented by Brig-Gen Edet Effiong, Director of Veteran Health, Nigerian Army, encouraged retired military personnel to stay physically active to maintain healthy circulation and prevent age-related joint problems. He recommended they utilize the Defence Health Maintenance Limited (DHML) for healthcare access for themselves and their families.
Mr Wolimoh revealed that Governor Sanwo-Olu recently contributed 500 bags of rice and committed N100 million to the council’s operations. He explained that the food supplies and educational materials purchased through this pledge would assist widows and other members with their needs.
The chairman also announced a new program providing annual educational support to 25 students affiliated with the Nigerian Legion.
Mrs Esther Leko, Coordinator of the Widows of Military Fallen Heroes Association, described the difficulties she has faced since losing her husband, particularly with managing food costs, school fees, and household expenses.
