The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ogun State has directed all party executives currently holding government appointments to immediately relinquish one of their two roles, warning that dual occupancy of party and statutory positions violates the party’s constitution.
The directive, made public on Thursday by state APC Publicity Secretary Femi Nuberu, aligns with an earlier position taken by Ogun State Governor Prince Dapo Abiodun and comes as the party rolls out a series of congresses across the state. The exercises, which began at the ward level on Wednesday, are designed to fill vacant positions across ward, local government, state, and national party structures.
Party officials in the crosshairs of the directive include Secretaries to Local Governments, Supervisors, Special Advisers, Consultants, and Local Government Education Authority Secretaries. The APC argued that holding executive positions in both government and party organs simultaneously undermines internal discipline and contradicts the principle of separation of powers.
Any affected executive who wishes to retain their party role must submit a formal written resignation from their government appointment, addressed to the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs and the Local Government Service Commission, with copies forwarded to the relevant council chairman and Head of Local Government Administration. The party stipulated that a resignation will only be recognized once all named authorities have acknowledged receipt.
The APC was careful to frame the move as a governance reform rather than a punitive action, assuring compliant members that their elected ward or zonal executive positions would remain intact. The party urged swift action, describing the directive as part of a broader push to strengthen internal structures and uphold sound political practice.
