The Nigeria Police Force has moved to quell a growing controversy over a N100 million transfer into the personal bank account of the son of outgoing Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun, describing the transaction as an error that has since been reversed.
Force spokesman Benjamin Hundeyin addressed the matter on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Monday, saying he reached out to Victor Egbetokun directly after the allegation went viral — initially surfacing through activist and publisher Omoyele Sowore, who claimed the funds originated from the Anambra State Government’s security vote account.
According to Hundeyin, Victor told him the deposit arrived without any prior notice. Upon discovering the sum in his account, he immediately instructed his accounts officer to send it back. He has since closed the account, printed his bank statement as evidence of the reversal, and filed a petition with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission requesting a formal probe into how the transfer was initiated.
“He said he saw N100 million in his account and told his accounts officer to reverse the money immediately, which he did,” Hundeyin told the programme.
The police confirmed the funds were returned to the Anambra State Government’s account shortly after they were detected.
The explanation is detailed, but it is unlikely to fully settle public unease. Security vote accounts are among the least transparent funds in Nigerian governance, subject to minimal oversight and rarely audited. That N100 million from such a fund found its way into a private individual’s account — even briefly, even mistakenly — is a question a press briefing alone may not be enough to answer. Whether the EFCC pursues the petition with any seriousness will determine how much of the full picture eventually emerges.
