The Labour Party has announced a new date for its primary elections ahead of the 2027 general elections, moving all scheduled exercises to Saturday, May 30, 2026.
The party said the affected primaries include those for the positions of president, governor, Senate, House of Representatives and State Houses of Assembly.
The development was disclosed in a statement issued by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Ken Eluma Asogwa.
According to the statement, the governorship and State Assembly primaries were initially slated for May 27, while the presidential and National Assembly primaries had earlier been fixed for May 29, 2026.
The party explained that the adjustment became necessary because the earlier dates coincided with major national events.
Asogwa stated that May 27 falls within the period of the 2026 Eid el-Kabir celebration, while May 29 marks the third anniversary of the inauguration of elected public office holders across Nigeria.
He noted that the party decided to shift the exercises to enable members, aspirants and supporters to fully participate in both occasions.
The statement added that the Labour Party considered the spiritual and national significance of the events before arriving at the decision to reschedule the primaries.
The party also apologised for any inconvenience the change might cause stakeholders and urged aspirants and members to take note of the new timetable and make necessary preparations.
The rescheduled primaries are expected to produce the party’s candidates for the 2027 presidential, governorship, National Assembly and state legislative elections.
