President Bola Tinubu will formally swear in the newly confirmed Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, on Wednesday during the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
The Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, disclosed that the inauguration ceremony would take place at the Council meeting. He also confirmed that Disu will not appear before the Senate for screening, departing from past practice.
Disu’s appointment was ratified on Monday by the Nigeria Police Council during a session chaired by President Tinubu at the Council Chamber of the Presidential Villa. The closed-door meeting was convened to affirm his nomination following the resignation of former IGP Kayode Egbetokun.
Before his confirmation as substantive IGP, Disu had been serving in an acting capacity after his appointment last week and was subsequently decorated with the rank. He was previously an Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG) and is expected to retire in about two months.
The Police Council meeting was attended by key government officials, including Vice President Kashim Shettima; Secretary to the Government of the Federation George Akume; National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu; Minister of Police Affairs Ibrahim Gaidam; Minister of the Federal Capital Territory Nyesom Wike; state governors; and other statutory members.
Chaired by the President, the Nigeria Police Council comprises the governors of the 36 states, the Chairman of the Police Service Commission, and the Inspector-General of Police. Established under the Police Act 2020, the Council serves as a key advisory body on internal security policy, police administration, budgeting, and senior appointments within the Force.
Although it does not oversee day-to-day police operations, the Council ensures due process in major institutional decisions, particularly the appointment of the Inspector-General of Police.
Disu’s confirmation comes at a time when Nigeria faces persistent and complex security challenges, heightening expectations for steady leadership at the helm of the country’s policing system.
