Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde struck a resolute tone at a high-level Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) meeting in Abuja on Tuesday, insisting that the party’s dwindling governorship numbers have not dampened the spirits of those who remain.
The PDP now holds just two governorships nationwide after Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal announced his exit from the party on Monday, crossing over to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). That departure leaves Makinde and Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed as the sole PDP governors in Nigeria.
Addressing the Expanded meeting of the party’s Board of Trustees (BoT), Makinde acknowledged the gravity of the moment but refused to frame it as defeat.
“I have been speaking with people who have been involved in the political evolution of this country, and none of them have seen a political landscape like what we are witnessing today,” he told attendees. “We are only two remaining, but we are not bothered.”
The governor urged members to consider their place in history, saying that when this turbulent chapter of Nigerian democracy is eventually documented, those who stayed would be remembered as standing with ordinary Nigerians.
Former Senate President Adolphus Wabara also addressed the gathering, calling on members to view the situation — including a recent Appeal Court judgment affecting the party — not as a setback but as a mandate to rebuild. He emphasized that all decisions moving forward must be anchored in the party’s constitution and the rule of law.
