Former Deputy National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Olabode George, has urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to take deliberate steps to preserve Nigeria’s democracy and avoid actions that could destabilise the nation.
In an open letter issued on Friday, George raised alarm over what he described as troubling political developments, warning that the country may be heading toward a dangerous crossroads if urgent measures are not taken.
He pointed to what he sees as increasing pressure on opposition voices and a growing imbalance in the political system, noting that such trends could weaken democratic structures and fuel instability.
According to him, a healthy democracy depends on the presence of strong and credible opposition, adding that any attempt to suppress dissent could create tension and uncertainty within the country.
George also cautioned the president against relying on praise from loyalists at the expense of honest feedback. He emphasised that leaders who ignore constructive criticism often face unintended consequences.
Describing the moment as critical, he said the president has the opportunity to change direction by strengthening institutions, encouraging inclusiveness, and restoring public confidence in governance.
He concluded by advising Tinubu to distance himself from sycophants, embrace truthful counsel, and act decisively to protect Nigeria’s unity, stability, and democratic future.
