Nigeria may witness another increase in the price of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), popularly known as cooking gas, as supply shortages continue to affect depots across the country.

Findings on Tuesday revealed that only a few major suppliers the Dangote Petroleum Refinery, Ardova Plc and Navgas currently have substantial LPG volumes available for sale in the domestic market.

Industry players linked the tightening supply to rising consumption levels in Lagos and other parts of the country, driven by the growing shift of households and businesses from traditional fuels to cooking gas.

Market checks showed that Dangote Refinery sold LPG at N1,060 per kilogramme, while Ardova Plc and Navgas offered the product at N1,065/kg and N1,085/kg respectively.

Operators in the sector warned that if the current supply pressure continues, the retail price of cooking gas could surge from the present average of about N1,300/kg to nearly N1,500/kg in the coming days.

Speaking on the development, the Chief Executive Officer of Petroleumprice.ng, Olatide Jeremiah, said the increasing demand for LPG is already putting pressure on prices nationwide.

According to him, the growing preference for cooking gas among households and commercial users is likely to trigger further increases in market prices.

Meanwhile, recent data from the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority indicated that domestic gas utilisation recorded significant growth in March 2026, reflecting the Federal Government’s efforts to promote local gas consumption for electricity generation, industrial operations and commercial activities.

Statistics released by the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission showed that domestic gas sales rose to 55,903.72 million standard cubic feet in March 2026, compared to 52,300.45 million standard cubic feet recorded in February 2026.

The report also revealed that Nigeria utilised 224,935.06 million standard cubic feet out of the 240,510.62 million standard cubic feet produced during the month, representing a utilisation rate of 93.5 per cent.

Analysts noted that the increase in gas usage highlights the country’s growing dependence on natural gas as Nigeria continues to seek cleaner and more reliable alternatives to diesel and other petroleum products.
