The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, has ordered a comprehensive investigation into security procedures at Yola Airport following reports that Patience Abbo, wife of former Adamawa North Senator Ishaku Abbo, repeatedly gained access to restricted airport areas without proper authorization.
The directive followed reports and video evidence published by PREMIUM TIMES showing Mrs. Abbo entering secured airside sections of the airport on multiple occasions, raising concerns about compliance with aviation security regulations.
According to information obtained by the newspaper, the minister requested explanations from airport security authorities after an initial report on the incident. Security officials reportedly informed the ministry that Mrs. Abbo had claimed she was travelling with her husband and was therefore permitted to pass through security checkpoints into restricted areas.
Officials said they only discovered she was not a passenger when she returned alone to the terminal after escorting her husband to the aircraft.
However, a second video later surfaced showing Mrs. Abbo once again accompanying her husband across the airport tarmac. In the footage, she is seen dressed in a brown abaya and pushing a colourful suitcase to the foot of an aircraft staircase.
The new evidence cast doubt on claims that the first incident was a simple misunderstanding, suggesting instead that the security breach may have occurred more than once and was tolerated by airport personnel.
The development reportedly prompted greater concern within the Ministry of Aviation, leading to the launch of a formal investigation into the circumstances surrounding the repeated unauthorized access.
Concerns Over Security Compliance
The explanation offered by airport security officials has sparked questions about adherence to both national and international aviation safety standards.
Under Part 17 of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Regulations (Nig.CARs), airport aprons and operational zones are classified as Security Restricted Areas (SRAs). Access to such locations is strictly limited to authorized personnel and screened passengers with valid travel documents.
Aviation experts have questioned why security officers relied on verbal claims rather than verifying boarding passes and passenger records before granting access to the restricted zones.
Industry insiders say the incident highlights a broader culture of preferential treatment at some domestic airports, where influential individuals are allegedly allowed to bypass established security procedures while regular passengers undergo rigorous screening.
Safety Risks Under Review
The ministerial investigation is expected to examine the role of Aviation Security (AVSEC) personnel involved in both incidents, as well as how a videographer was permitted access to film activities near operational aircraft.
Speaking on the dangers associated with unauthorized access to aircraft areas, Abubakar Manir, Officer-in-Charge of the Crime, Intelligence and Investigation Unit at FAAN Sokoto, previously warned that such actions pose serious safety risks.
He noted that civilians unfamiliar with airport safety protocols could be injured, particularly around aircraft equipped with propeller engines and other operational equipment.
Efforts to obtain comments from former Senator Ishaku Abbo regarding the repeated security breaches were unsuccessful at the time of filing the report.
The investigation is expected to determine whether airport officials violated established security procedures and recommend measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
