The Presidency has taken a swipe at the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, following reports that he was physically exhausted due to his demanding political activities.
The Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, made the remark on Tuesday while reacting to comments by the Deputy Campaign Spokesperson of the NDC, Dr Sam Omale, who dismissed concerns about Obi’s health condition.
Omale had earlier clarified Obi’s condition during an interview on Channels Television, explaining that the former Labour Party presidential candidate was not suffering from any medical problem but was only experiencing exhaustion.
According to him, Obi’s busy political schedule, frequent movements between different locations and commitment to his political engagements had taken a toll on his physical energy.
He explained that Obi was deeply passionate about his political activities and often attempted to handle several responsibilities at the same time, leaving him with limited opportunities to rest.
Omale further stated that members of Obi’s team had been encouraging him to slow down, get enough sleep and take time to recover from the physical demands of his engagements.
Reacting to the explanation, Onanuga took to his X handle, where he mocked Obi, suggesting that the development had shown that the former Anambra State governor was not immune to physical exhaustion and illness.
In his post, the presidential aide described Obi as an ordinary human being who could fall ill like anyone else, despite what he portrayed as his public image of exceptional strength.
“So, Saint Peter Obi is not a Superman after all. He can fall ill like all mortals. I wish him a quick recovery so he can rejoin what looks like another doomed presidential campaign,” Onanuga wrote.
His comment has added another dimension to the political exchanges between supporters of President Tinubu and Obi, who is expected to play a major role in the 2027 presidential election.
While the NDC has maintained that Obi’s condition is simply the result of physical exhaustion from his demanding schedule, Onanuga used the opportunity to criticise the opposition politician and dismiss the prospects of his presidential campaign.
