The Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN) has opposed the adoption of a Muslim-Muslim ticket for elective offices ahead of the 2027 general elections, insisting that Nigeria’s religious and ethnic diversity should be reflected in its political leadership.
The position was contained in a communiqué issued after the fellowship’s National Executive Council (NEC) meeting and signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Dr. Sylvanus Ukafia.
The statement comes shortly after the All Progressives Congress (APC) endorsed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima, both Muslims, as its presidential ticket for the 2027 election.
According to the PFN, while it remains committed to Nigeria’s unity, peace and progress, inclusive governance is essential to strengthening national cohesion, fostering trust and ensuring every citizen has a sense of belonging.
The fellowship stressed that Nigeria is a multi-religious and multi-ethnic nation whose leadership should reflect its diversity.
It maintained that political arrangements should be designed to accommodate the country’s plural nature and avoid creating the perception that any religious group is being excluded from governance.
PFN Opposes Restrictions on Christian Preaching
The Christian body also rejected any proposed law or government policy aimed at limiting Christian evangelism, describing such measures as inconsistent with the provisions of the Nigerian Constitution.
According to the PFN, the Constitution guarantees every citizen the rights to freedom of thought, conscience, religion, expression and peaceful assembly, and these freedoms must be protected.
While acknowledging the government’s responsibility to maintain public order, the fellowship cautioned that regulations should not be used as a tool to suppress legitimate religious activities or violate fundamental human rights.
It called on all levels of government to uphold constitutional provisions, protect the rights of Nigerians regardless of their faith and ensure that no legislation discriminates against any religious community.
Christians Urged to Remain Peaceful
The PFN urged Christians across the country to remain peaceful, law-abiding and prayerful while exercising their constitutional rights responsibly.
It also encouraged continuous dialogue between government, religious leaders and civil society groups to address issues capable of threatening national unity.
According to the fellowship, Nigeria’s diversity should be embraced as a source of strength rather than division.
The PFN reaffirmed its commitment to praying for the nation and collaborating with stakeholders to promote a peaceful, just and prosperous Nigeria where every citizen enjoys equal rights and protection under the law.
