The German Mission in Nigeria has warned Nigerians applying for visas against paying agents or third parties to secure visa appointments.
The mission also advised applicants not to send their visa documents by email in an attempt to obtain appointments, urging them instead to use only official German government channels.
The warning was issued on Wednesday through the mission’s X handle amid concerns about the proper process for starting visa applications.
The German Mission advised applicants to first determine the appropriate visa category based on the purpose and duration of their intended stay.
It explained that a Schengen visa is generally required for short stays of up to 90 days within a 180-day period, including tourism and family visits. Applicants planning to stay in Germany for more than 90 days may require a national visa for purposes such as employment, education, vocational training and some family reunification cases.
Applicants were also advised to confirm the German diplomatic mission responsible for processing their applications before proceeding.
The mission said applicants should use the official online appointment system for the relevant visa category and follow all instructions provided.
For some long-stay visa categories, applicants can begin the process through Germany’s Consular Services Portal. However, the mission stressed that an online application does not eliminate the need for an in-person appointment where applicants are required to provide biometric information, submit original documents and undergo other checks.
The German Mission further urged applicants to prepare all required documents and submit them through the approved channels.
It specifically warned Nigerians against paying agents or other third parties simply to obtain visa appointments.
“You do not need to pay an agent just to book a visa appointment. The official appointment booking is free,” the mission said.
Applicants were also advised to ensure that their appointments are booked under the correct visa category. According to the mission, selecting the wrong category could result in delays or force an applicant to book another appointment.
During appointments, applicants may be required to submit their documents, provide biometric data and answer questions relating to their applications.
The mission urged Nigerians to rely on information provided through official German government channels and exercise caution when dealing with individuals or organisations offering visa appointments in exchange for money.
It added that eligible applicants for national visas can use the official Consular Services Portal to submit an initial application and receive instructions on the next stage of the process.
The German Mission said following the official procedure would help applicants avoid unnecessary payments, incorrect applications and delays in visa processing.
