Iranian authorities have executed Siavash Jamshidi, a man convicted of several offences, including firing a military-grade weapon at police officers during anti-government protests earlier this year.
Jamshidi was accused of targeting security personnel during mass demonstrations that began over grievances about living costs and reached their peak on January 8 and 9.
Iran’s judiciary said Jamshidi was sentenced to death for moharebeh, a legal term commonly translated as “waging war against God,” after he was convicted of using a firearm against security personnel. He was also convicted of conspiracy and collusion against national security.
According to the judiciary’s Mizan Online website, Jamshidi faced additional charges unrelated to the protests, including fraud, threats, theft, possession and carrying of an illegal military-grade weapon.
He was also convicted of complicity in kidnapping, threatening people with a weapon and intentionally causing bodily harm.
Mizan reported that Jamshidi was active during the demonstrations, which were linked to public grievances over the rising cost of living.
Iranian authorities said more than 3,000 people were killed during the unrest and blamed what they described as terrorist acts orchestrated by the United States and Israel. Foreign-based non-governmental organisations, however, have alleged that Iranian security forces fired on protesters.
Following the unrest, Iranian authorities increased arrests and executions involving people accused of participating in the protests.
The report said the executions also increased following the conflict involving Iran, with arrests and death sentences linked to both the unrest and the war.
Iran reportedly executed at least 1,639 people in 2025, according to Iran Human Rights and Together Against the Death Penalty, making it the country’s highest annual execution figure since 1989. Amnesty International also says Iran carries out more executions than any country except China.
