The United Nations (UN) has expressed confidence in Nigeria’s ability to contain the newly confirmed case of Ebola virus disease, assuring the Federal Government of its readiness to provide support to prevent further spread of the infection.

The UN Secretary-General’s Spokesperson, Stéphane Dujarric, gave the assurance on Wednesday while responding to questions at the UN Headquarters in New York.

Dujarric said the international organisation was concerned about the detection of the Ebola Bundibugyo virus in Nigeria, which has become the fifth country to report a case during the ongoing outbreak.

However, he commended Nigeria’s health authorities for their swift response and ongoing contact-tracing activities, expressing confidence in their ability to manage the situation and prevent further transmission.

“We have full confidence in the ability and the capacity of the Nigerian Government’s health authorities to deal with this single case,” he said.

The UN spokesperson acknowledged that the detection of Ebola in a new country was a source of concern, particularly amid fears that the outbreak could spread across international borders.

He, however, noted that Nigerian authorities had already begun tracing people who might have come into contact with the infected patient to identify potential cases and prevent further transmission.

When asked whether the UN was concerned that the outbreak could spread to more countries or continue for another year, Dujarric emphasised the need for international cooperation and strict compliance with established public health guidelines.

He urged countries to work closely with the World Health Organisation (WHO) and comply with international health regulations to strengthen efforts to control the outbreak.

“It is also incumbent that countries work together, follow international health regulations, work with the WHO,” he said.

Dujarric explained that the WHO was established to help countries respond to international public health emergencies, adding that the agency was actively involved in addressing the situation.

“This is why the WHO was created, to help to deal with these issues, and I know they’re very much on top of it,” he added.

The UN spokesperson further reaffirmed the organisation’s willingness to assist Nigeria in managing the outbreak, stressing that the international body remained available to provide support where necessary.

“We are, as always, ready to assist the Government of Nigeria in any way possible,” he declared.

He also expressed confidence that WHO officials in Nigeria were maintaining direct communication with the country’s health authorities to coordinate the response and ensure that appropriate measures were implemented.

How Ebola Case Was Detected in Nigeria

The UN’s assurance followed the Federal Government’s confirmation on Tuesday of an imported case of Ebola Bundibugyo involving a woman who recently travelled from Uganda.

According to information provided by the WHO, the patient developed symptoms on October 7 and sought medical attention in Abuja on October 11.

She subsequently tested positive for the virus on October 20, prompting health authorities to intensify efforts to contain the infection and prevent possible community transmission.

The WHO disclosed that the patient had been placed in isolation and was receiving medical care.

As part of the containment measures, Nigerian authorities had identified 44 people who might have had contact with the infected woman. The contacts were being monitored as health officials continued their investigations.

Contact tracing is a critical public health measure used to identify people who may have been exposed to an infected person, monitor their health and take prompt action if symptoms develop.

The Federal Government and relevant health agencies are expected to continue surveillance and other preventive measures to reduce the risk of further transmission.

Outbreak Raises Regional Health Concerns

Nigeria’s confirmed case comes amid an ongoing Ebola outbreak that began in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) in May and subsequently raised concerns about the possibility of cross-border transmission.

The spread of the virus to additional countries has increased the need for cooperation among governments, health agencies and international organisations to strengthen surveillance, improve early detection and coordinate emergency responses.

According to the WHO’s latest situation report cited in the report, the Democratic Republic of the Congo had recorded 9,637 confirmed infections and 4,646 deaths as of October 19.

The figures underscore the seriousness of the outbreak and the importance of preventing further spread across the region.

Although the UN has expressed confidence in Nigeria’s response, health authorities continue to face the task of monitoring identified contacts, investigating possible exposures and ensuring that suspected cases are detected and managed promptly.

The UN’s position reinforces the importance of Nigeria’s collaboration with the WHO and other international partners as the country works to contain the imported case and prevent a wider outbreak.
