Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, has assured the people of Ijebuland that a new Awujale of Ijebuland will emerge before May 29, 2027.
The governor gave the assurance during the Ogun East Senatorial District stakeholders’ meeting held in Ijebu-Ode. His media adviser, Kayode Akinmade, disclosed this in a statement issued on Wednesday.
Abiodun said his administration was committed to ensuring that the selection of the next Awujale was conducted peacefully and in a manner acceptable to the people of Ijebuland.
He acknowledged the importance of the Awujale institution to the cultural heritage, identity and unity of the people, urging residents to remain calm and patient while the necessary processes were being completed.
According to the governor, the government is giving the succession process the attention it deserves to ensure that the next monarch enjoys the acceptance and support of the people.
The Awujale stool became vacant in July 2025 following the death of Oba Sikiru Adetona, who died at the age of 91 after reigning for 65 years.
The late monarch was one of Nigeria’s longest-serving traditional rulers, having ascended the throne in 1960.
Beyond the succession process, Abiodun used the stakeholders’ meeting to highlight major economic projects expected to promote development in Ogun East Senatorial District.
Among the projects mentioned were oil exploration activities around Eba Island and the proposed Gateway Deep-Sea Port in Ogun Waterside Local Government Area.
He also highlighted the proposed Blue Marine Special Economic Zone, saying the projects could attract investments, create employment opportunities and stimulate economic growth across the state.
According to him, the initiatives are expected to strengthen maritime trade, manufacturing and logistics while positioning Ogun State as an important destination for local and international investors.
The governor further reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to infrastructure development and investment promotion, while acknowledging the support of President Bola Tinubu for projects in the state.
Abiodun urged residents to continue supporting government initiatives and maintaining peace, stressing that cooperation between the government and the people remained essential for sustainable development.
