A Federal High Court in Abuja has reportedly ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to recognise former Imo State Governor, Rochas Okorocha, as the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate for Imo West Senatorial District in the 2027 general elections.
The judgment, reportedly delivered on Thursday by Justice Obiora Egwuatu, also directed incumbent Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma to stop presenting himself as the APC’s senatorial candidate for the January 16, 2027 election.
The court made the orders while ruling on a suit filed by Okorocha, who challenged the recognition of Uzodimma as the APC candidate for the senatorial district.
According to the report, Justice Egwuatu held that the evidence presented before the court showed that Okorocha won the APC senatorial primary election conducted on May 18, 2026, which was monitored by INEC.
Consequently, the judge directed the APC to submit Okorocha’s name to INEC as its duly nominated candidate for the forthcoming election.
The dispute followed the outcome of the party’s primary election, in which INEC’s official results reportedly declared Uzodimma the winner with 230,464 votes, while Okorocha was credited with 1,098 votes.
Dissatisfied with the outcome, the former governor approached the court to challenge INEC’s recognition of Uzodimma as the party’s candidate.
The case was filed under suit number FHC/ABJ/CS/1854/2026.
In his legal challenge, Okorocha questioned the process that produced Uzodimma as the APC candidate and also raised concerns about the governor’s eligibility to contest the senatorial election while still serving as the governor of Imo State.
The reported ruling represents a major development in the political contest for the Imo West Senatorial District seat ahead of the 2027 general elections.
However, the details of the judgment and its implications for the APC’s nomination process would need to be confirmed through the court’s official records and INEC’s response.
