The airy auditorium of Illumination Assembly, Lekki Light Centre, Ajah, Lagos was filled to capacity, of course, the six feet: two meters social distancing Covid-19 precautionary measure was dutifully observed. The occasion was the widely puffed ‘Covid-19 Palliative Gifts for Widows and Widowers’ convened by Archbishop Designate Isaac Idahosa through his self-christened foundation, in collaboration with The Directorate of Strategy and Planning, Christian Association of Nigeria, and Women Wing of Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria, both in Lagos.

The Saturday, July 11 meeting was called by Bishop Idahosa to provide succor and to also identify with widows and widowers who are being dealt economic blows as a result of the ravaging Covid-19 pandemic.
No fewer than 1000 widows and widowers that came together from far and near, including from Epe, Abeokuta, Surulere and Ajah benefitted from cash gifts, food stuff palliative provided by the televangelist convener of the charity ball.

The motivation for giving to widows according to Bishop Isaac Idahosa stemmed from his place of prayers. Having donated in the past to different socio-economic groups since the lockdown commenced in March, God instructed him expressly to likewise see to the welfare of widows.

“...You can always do better than your best paddled by grace. The meaning of my name is hearing from God, two weeks ago when I was praying, when the Lord said, ‘How about the widows and widowers?’, I said ‘They’re fine’, and he said I have not reached out to them, he gave me an instruction to find a way to reach out to widows and widows.

“Sincerely, when this instruction came weeks ago, I had less than a hundred thousand in my account. But I didn’t let that deter me. If it is will, it is his bill. Heaven will always budget for its project.

"I went on by faith and I must tell you, this remains the most successful of our giving events. We’ve been seeing successes; however, today’s outcome is overwhelming. I feel a deep sense of fulfilment,” he submitted.

An elated beneficiary, Mrs. Testimony Umoru appreciated Bishop Idahosa for the initiative and did not hesitate to express her gratitude.

“There are indeed good people, Bishop Isaac Idahosa is one. How do you care so much for others like this? The situation of things in Nigeria right now affects everybody, but the Bishop still choose to support us widows, May God never stop blessing him, may his grace never run dry.”

Mrs. Blessing Hassan explained how significant the food stuff and cash gift are to her children and her. According to Hassan, “When I heard about this giving by Bishop Idahosa, I had to trek from my place here. I am a petty trader, yesterday (Friday), all I made from sales was about N350.00.

“How could that have sustained my three children and I?” she lamented.
“The foodstuff will really go a long way for us, God bless Bishop Idahosa for us,” Hassan concluded.

Another beneficiary who spoke on condition of anonymity with Apples Bite International Magazine lamented how Covid-19 outbreak has affected her family, “This Covid-19 has affected us all in very terrible ways. Plans halted; we can’t do much. We are only merely surviving right now. God bless Bishop Idahosa for providing foodstuff for us, which is a necessity. Hunger kills more people than Covid-19.”

The convener, Bishop Isaac Idahosa explained that he is particularly moved by the plights of these widows, who lost their husbands who were mostly sole providers for their families. And vows to empower these people both financially and with requisite skills to enable stand on their feet economically.

“...For most of these homes, fathers were the sole bread winners, and since their passing, most home have found it hard to cope. There are a lot of widows are doing well for themselves, and we give glory to God for them, but those we are looking out for are people who are struggling to keep up.

“We are not just interested in giving these people fishes, we are more interested in teaching them how to fish. These will not be the last time we are seeing to the welfare of widows; we shall find more sustainable means of livelihood for them.

“We do this, not because we have so much, but because we care so much,” Bishop Idahosa closed.

Bishop Idahosa was recently named ‘Covid-19 Celebrity Champion’ by Apples Bite International Magazine alongside Nigerian born Heavyweight Boxer, Anthony Joshua, Pastor E.A. Adeboye, Banky W and others.
