Governor Alex Otti has enacted the Senior Citizens Bill, establishing comprehensive welfare protections for elderly residents in Abia State. The legislation, part of a recent package of executive bills, creates a support framework for citizens aged 60 and above.
Under the new law, qualifying senior citizens will receive monthly financial assistance, access to free medical services, and additional social welfare provisions aimed at improving living standards and ensuring sustained social protection for the elderly population.
The initiative has drawn widespread praise from stakeholders and civil society organizations, who view it as a meaningful advance in inclusive governance and the state’s commitment to social responsibility. Government representatives indicate that implementation plans are currently under development to guarantee efficient and transparent benefit distribution.
The signing reflects Governor Otti’s administration’s broader focus on social reform and enhanced welfare infrastructure for vulnerable populations across Abia State.
