Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 general elections, Peter Obi, has urged governments at all levels in Nigeria to adopt a more proactive approach to disaster management.
This is coming following the recent flood disaster in Yola, Adamawa State, and Nigerians have been reacting.
Speaking via a press statement, Obi expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives and the injuries sustained in the incident.
According to him, the tragedy is yet another sad reminder of the urgent need for major investment in disaster preparedness and environmental protection.
He consoled the Nigerian families that lost loved ones to the latest disaster, stating that decisive steps must be taken to provide a lasting solution.
“My heart goes out to the families of the latest disaster who have lost loved ones and to all those injured in the tragic flood in Yola.
This is another painful reminder of the urgent need for serious investment in disaster preparedness, environmental protection, and urban infrastructure across Nigeria,” he said.
Peter Obi hailed the swift response of the Adamawa State Government, the state police command, and other relevant agencies involved in rescue efforts.
He, however, concluded by saying that such disasters should no longer be treated as fleeting headlines.
“Disasters must no longer be reduced to passing headlines. It is time for our government, at all levels, to embrace a proactive approach. Investing in effective drainage infrastructure to protect our people and preserve their means of livelihood.
I stand in solidarity with the affected communities in Adamawa State and call on NEMA and other relevant authorities to move swiftly to provide relief and long-term support for the victims.
May the souls of the departed rest in peace, and may healing come swiftly to the injured and displaced,” he added.
