The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has spoken out strongly against an attack targeting Peter Obi, former 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, alongside several party chieftains in Benin City, the Edo state capital.
Yunusa Tanko, national coordinator of the Obidient Movement, revealed via X that Obi and other party figures were attacked at the Benin residence of ADC chieftain John Odigie-Oyegun on Tuesday. The incident reportedly unfolded shortly after the group returned from the ADC secretariat, where they had formally received Olumide Akpata — the 2023 Labour Party governorship candidate for Edo — into the party fold.
ADC national publicity secretary Bolaji Abdullahi described the incident as “a grave and disturbing development,” warning that it represents a serious blow to democratic governance in Nigeria. He drew a direct line between the attack and a July 2025 statement by Edo Governor Monday Okpebholo, who had reportedly warned Obi against visiting the state without his approval.
“We didn’t know at the time that the governor’s threat would include an assassination plot,” Abdullahi said.
He argued that violence and intimidation are tools wielded by those afraid of the people’s will, and that such actions tarnish Nigeria’s democratic image. The ADC vowed to press forward undeterred, pledging to continue its peaceful push for a Nigeria where opposition voices are protected and every citizen can exercise their rights without fear.
