There is a Yoruba saying that captures the moment Ogun State finds itself in: “Bí a bá n wo ẹnu ọ̀nà ilé ẹnìkan, a máa mọ ohun tó wà nínú ilé náà” , by looking at a man’s doorstep, you already know what lies within his house. For decades, the Adebutu name has built doorsteps across Ogun State that anyone can walk up to and inspect: tank farms in Ibefun, farmland in Odogbolu, a football culture in Ikenne-Remo, hotels rising in Abeokuta, foundations quietly funding orphans and widows long before election season made philanthropy fashionable. Compare that to the doorstep of Adeola Olamilekan Yayi, a name that, until recently, meant almost nothing to the ordinary Ogun indigene, and now suddenly means cash palliatives, branded rice bags and empowerment schemes dressed up as generosity but paid for from the public till he happens to sit atop.
This is not a contest between two philanthropists. It is a contest between two philosophies of power. The Adebutu investment story in Ogun is old enough to have grandchildren. Sir Kessington Adebutu did not wait for political office to plant Petrolex’s storage tanks and gantries in Ibefun, did not require the machinery of state to commit billions across Sagamu, Ikenne, Remo North and Iperu Remo for community development. Segun Adebutu’s foundation reached more than three hundred orphans and vulnerable children not because a election was near, but because that is what four decades of private capital rooted in a home state looks like when it decides to give back. Ladi Adebutu’s agricultural footprint in Odogbolu, spanning thousands of hectares of oil palm, livestock and agro-processing, was built brick by brick, harvest by harvest, long before any campaign poster carried his face.
Adeola Olamilekan Yayi’s story reads differently, and Ogun people are not fools; they can tell the difference between a man who arrives with a legacy and a man who arrives with a budget line. Where is the factory he built before he found himself in government? Where is the scholarship scheme, the hospital wing, the farm settlement that bore his name when nobody was watching and no vote was at stake? The silence is the answer. What Ogun is witnessing instead is the oldest trick in the political book: an accidental occupant of relevance using the machinery and treasury of government to manufacture, overnight, the kind of goodwill that families like the Adebutus spent generations earning honestly. Sharing government palliatives and calling it empowerment is not investment. It is theatre, and it is theatre paid for by the very people being performed to.
There is a word for gifts that arrive suddenly, generously, and with strings the giver hopes you will not notice. The Greeks gave the world that word through the story of a wooden horse rolled into Troy’s gates as a peace offering. Ogun’s political horse today comes in branded envelopes and empowerment kits, and like the original, its real cargo is not goodwill but ambition, smuggled into the public’s affection under cover of largesse. Ogun people should ask themselves: what happens after the loudspeakers go silent and the campaign convoy moves to the next ward? Does the road stay tarred? Does the factory stay open? Does the scholarship outlive the ballot? With the Adebutu legacy, the answer has been demonstrated over decades. With sudden, government-funded generosity, the answer usually arrives only after the votes are counted, and by then it is too late to ask for a refund.
Ogun State does not lack for people who talk about development. It lacks, painfully at times, for people whose development talk is backed by a paper trail that predates their political ambition. The Adebutu family’s imprint on Remo, on Abeokuta’s skyline, on Odogbolu’s farmlands, is not campaign material invented for this season; it is the accumulated evidence of people who built inside Ogun before they ever asked Ogun for anything in return. That is the standard by which every pretender to Ogun’s political affection should be measured, and by that standard, sudden largesse funded by public money is not leadership. It is borrowed light, and borrowed light, as every Yoruba elder knows, goes out the moment the borrower is asked to return the lamp.
