Abuja Electricity Distribution Plc (AEDC) has restructured into a holding company to adapt to Nigeria’s decentralized electricity regulatory framework established by the Electricity Act of 2023.
The transformation includes the creation of two new subsidiaries: Niger Electricity Distribution Company and Kogi Electricity Distribution Company. These entities will operate under their respective state regulatory commissions while remaining part of the AEDC Group.
The 2023 legislation granted state governments authority to establish independent electricity markets and regulatory bodies, prompting AEDC’s strategic realignment to improve operational flexibility and governance across its coverage areas.
AEDC has appointed Engr. Sam Odekina as Chief Business Officer and Acting Managing Director of Niger Electricity Distribution Company, and Mr. Desmond Eboh to the same roles at Kogi Electricity Distribution Company. The company plans to extend similar operations to Nasarawa State soon.
Managing Director Engr. Chijioke Okwuokenye explained that the holding company model enables the organization to meet state-specific regulatory requirements while maintaining unified standards across the group.
“The Holdco structure aligns perfectly with our goal to enhance operational efficiency and adapt to Nigeria’s evolving energy landscape while exploring new opportunities, drive growth and contribute to Nigeria’s energy sector development,” Okwuokenye said.
The company emphasized that all subsidiaries will function as an integrated entity, with uniform employment conditions across the group to ensure workforce stability.
AEDC distributes electricity to the Federal Capital Territory and portions of Niger, Kogi, and Nasarawa States, serving residential, commercial, and industrial customers throughout its franchise areas.
