Senator Gbenga Daniel, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Navy and former Governor of Ogun State, is optimistic that Nigeria will protect its oil-rich Tongeji Island in Ogun State, preventing a scenario similar to the loss of the Bakassi Peninsula to Cameroon. During a media briefing after an oversight function at the Western Naval Command, Lagos, Daniel emphasized the importance of preventing the abandonment of Tongeji Island.
Tongeji Island, known for its stunning waterfront and scenic beauty, is situated in Ipokia LGA of Ogun State. With its proximity to Benin Republic and recent discoveries of crude oil, Daniel urged proactive measures from both the Ogun State Government and the Federal Government to develop the island and harness its abundant natural resources.
Senator Daniel disclosed that the Federal Government and the committee are strategically planning to ensure the protection of Tongeji Island, citing security reasons for not disclosing specific strategies. He expressed confidence in the Navy’s capability to safeguard the island, highlighting the urgent need for a jetty in the Badagry area of Lagos to enhance naval operations.
Acknowledging the Navy’s challenges, including underfunding, Senator Daniel assured that the committee would advocate for increased funding and spare parts acquisition. He thanked President Bola Tinubu for approving a supplementary budget to support the military and Navy, emphasizing transparency in budgetary disbursement.
Rear Admiral Mustapha Hassan, Flag Officer Commanding Western Naval Command, revealed plans to visit Tongeji Island with Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun to enhance collaboration for the island’s protection. The Senate committee, including Senators Vinus Danbayaro, David Dongota, Patrick Ndubueze, Anthony Siafiaro, Ibrahim Kalid, C. Dike, and Suleman Sumaila, expressed commitment to overseeing the judicious use of allocated funds for the Navy’s operations.
