Oriyomi Hamzat, The Ibadan-based radio broadcaster made his political ambitions public during a massive rally at Obafemi Awolowo Stadium in Ibadan on Saturday, where organizers reported over 7,500 supporters from across the state’s 33 local government areas gathered to show their backing.
Hamzat, who chairs Agidigbo FM, told the crowd that widespread public demand had motivated his decision to seek office.
“The people of Oyo State have called on me to serve, and I have answered that call,” he stated. “My vision centers on implementing tangible programmes that will transform lives, expand opportunities for young people and women, and ensure our state government delivers actual results rather than empty promises.”
The broadcaster emphasized his commitment to accountable leadership and promised that residents would see genuine action from his administration.
Responding to rumors about potentially withdrawing from the race, Hamzat categorically denied any such plans.
“There should be no confusion: the ‘Oyo Npe O’ movement has joined forces with Accord, and I am fully committed to this governorship campaign,” he declared. “This movement represents those without a platform and champions everyday citizens. Oyo State can do better, and we will bring that change together.”
During the ceremony, Accord’s National Chairman Maxwell Mgbudem formally welcomed Hamzat by presenting him with his party membership card. Mgbudem praised the new member’s background in media, charitable work and community service as valuable assets.
“Having Dr. Oriyomi Hamzat join Accord significantly strengthens our party,” Mgbudem said. “His proven commitment to serving the public and uplifting communities makes him well-suited for leadership in Oyo State.”
The chairman added that Accord remains focused on delivering genuine democratic benefits through governance that prioritizes citizens’ needs.
Cross-border support emerged from Osun State, where Governor Ademola Adeleke sent his Political Affairs Commissioner, Biyi Odunlade, to express solidarity with Hamzat’s candidacy.
“Dr. Oriyomi Hamzat represents the integrity, vision and people-focused approach we value,” Odunlade stated. “The Accord chapters in both Osun and Oyo will collaborate to spread our message throughout the South-west region.”
Political Journey
Hamzat built his public profile through his work in broadcasting, particularly his influential radio programme ‘Kokoro Alate’ on Agidigbo FM. The show gained a devoted following by addressing daily challenges facing ordinary people, advocating for social justice and highlighting community concerns.
This platform helped him develop strong support among working-class and low-income residents who viewed him as someone genuinely representing their interests. Beyond radio, his philanthropic activities and civic engagement have solidified his popularity throughout Ibadan and wider Oyo State.
His substantial public following has now converted into political support as he joins Accord for his gubernatorial campaign. Though historically considered a minor party, Accord has recently intensified efforts to build its organizational capacity and public presence, especially across the South-west.
Party officials say they are positioning Accord as a credible alternative heading into the 2026 Osun off-cycle governorship election and the 2027 general elections. The strategy relies on grassroots organizing and prominent candidates like Governor Adeleke to expand the party’s influence.
With candidates like Hamzat drawing large crowds and generating significant public interest, Accord appears to be building momentum in its effort to compete with Nigeria’s dominant political parties in the region.
