The Akwa Ibom State Government has dismissed a media aide serving in the office of the Political Adviser to Governor Umo Eno after he publicly suggested that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu should resign over the country’s challenges.
The aide, identified as Osborne Okon, was relieved of his appointment on Tuesday through a letter signed by the Political Adviser to the Governor, Godwin Ntuk Udeh.
In the letter, his dismissal was justified on grounds of “actions bordering on disloyalty” and the need to maintain discipline within the office. It stated that his appointment was terminated with immediate effect.
Okon’s controversial Facebook post, which reportedly triggered the decision, criticised the President’s leadership. In the post, he wrote that “in a sane clime, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu would’ve respectfully and honourably resigned,” while noting that he remained a member of the All Progressives Congress despite his views.
The development has drawn attention given that Governor Umo Eno defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the APC last year and has since pledged support for President Tinubu and the party’s leadership.
Reacting to his dismissal, Okon said he only became aware of the termination after associates alerted him to the circulating letter online. He described the manner of his removal as embarrassing and insisted he was not formally informed beforehand.
He also questioned the allegation of disloyalty, stating that he had maintained a cordial working relationship within the office and was unaware of any prior issues.
Okon further explained that he had continued in the role despite earning a monthly stipend of ₦65,000, saying his motivation was not financial but the hope of future opportunities.
He also faulted the process of his removal, arguing that he should have been informed directly if there were concerns about his conduct.
Despite the controversy, Okon maintained that he remains a supporter of both the APC and Governor Umo Eno’s administration, adding that he will continue to mobilise support for the governor’s “ARISE Agenda” and his re-election bid.
