APC Clears Fubara For 2027 Primaries As Rift With Wike Deepens

Reports from Abuja indicate that the All Progressives Congress (APC) has cleared Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, to participate in the party’s governorship primaries ahead of the 2027 general elections, a move already generating fresh political tension in Rivers State.

According to sources within the party, Fubara appeared before the APC screening committee and was reportedly cleared without any opposition. Insiders described the process as smooth and routine, with some claiming the governor received a “take a bow and go” treatment — a political expression often seen as a sign of approval from party leaders.

The development is expected to strengthen Fubara’s chances of officially contesting for the APC governorship ticket as political activities gradually build up ahead of the 2027 elections. However, the APC has yet to release an official statement confirming the outcome of the screening exercise or the names of all aspirants cleared so far.

Fubara’s reported clearance is being viewed as a major twist in Rivers politics, especially amid his prolonged political battle with his predecessor and current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.

Wike, who played a major role in Fubara’s emergence as governor, has in recent times openly criticised the Rivers governor and is believed to oppose any second-term ambition by him. The fallout between both political figures has continued to split loyalties across the state’s political structure.

Despite the tension, Fubara has continued to strengthen his influence within Rivers State politics, while factions loyal to Wike still maintain control in several political camps and structures. Political observers believe the latest development could further intensify the power struggle ahead of the APC primaries.

Analysts also say the APC’s approach in Rivers State reflects wider political calculations as the ruling party attempts to boost its chances in one of Nigeria’s most competitive political states. However, they warn that internal disagreements among key political actors may significantly affect the outcome of the primaries.

Although reports of Fubara’s clearance have continued to circulate, the APC is yet to conclude its nationwide screening process, and final decisions on candidates are expected closer to the party primaries.

For now, the rivalry between Fubara and Wike remains at the centre of Rivers State politics as preparations for the 2027 governorship race gather momentum.
