Former Vice President and presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Atiku Abubakar, has raised concerns over a suspicious payment made into one of his private bank accounts ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Atiku said the transaction was not authorised, requested or known to him or his campaign organisation, raising questions about how the sender obtained the details of an account whose information is not publicly available.

The former vice president disclosed the development through a statement issued by his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication, Phrank Shaibu.

According to the statement, an unidentified individual transferred money into Atiku’s private account with the narration “Contribution Electioneering Campaign.”

Shaibu stressed that neither Atiku nor his campaign team solicited, authorised or had any prior knowledge of the payment or the identity of the person or organisation behind it.

“Neither His Excellency nor his campaign solicited, authorised or has any knowledge of the individual or entity behind the unauthorised payment,” the statement said.

Concern Over How Account Details Were Obtained

Atiku’s major concern, however, goes beyond the unexpected credit.

He questioned how an unknown individual was able to obtain the details of a strictly private bank account that, according to his camp, is not in the public domain.

The former vice president said the incident could indicate a possible breach of confidential financial information and raised concerns about the security of Nigerians’ banking details.

He asked how unknown persons were able to obtain the confidential banking information of a private citizen and suggested that individuals with privileged access to sensitive financial records might have been involved.

Atiku warned that if the banking information of a former vice president and presidential candidate could allegedly be accessed and used without his knowledge, the financial privacy of ordinary Nigerians could also be at risk.

He said the alleged breach, if established, could expose account holders to serious security threats from criminals, including kidnappers, terrorists, bandits and fraudsters.

Fear of Political and Criminal Implications

The unexplained payment has also generated concern within Atiku’s camp because of the description attached to the transaction.

The narration identifying the money as an electioneering campaign contribution could potentially create a financial trail linking Atiku or his campaign to an individual or organisation with which he has no relationship.

Reports have noted that there is currently no evidence that the money originated from a terrorist, drug-trafficking or other criminal organisation. The concern is instead that an unexplained payment could later be misrepresented or used to create an association between Atiku and people or activities unknown to him.

This has made the matter particularly sensitive as political activities intensify ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

Bank Investigates Transaction

A bank involved in the transaction has reportedly commenced an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the payment.

Further checks indicated that the transfer originated from an OPay account. However, Atiku’s camp remains concerned that identifying the immediate sender may not necessarily establish who ultimately initiated or was behind the transaction.

The investigation is expected to establish the source of the funds, how the sender obtained Atiku’s account details and whether there was any unauthorised access to confidential banking information.

Atiku Alerts Security Agencies

The former vice president said the matter had been brought to the attention of security agencies and the Nigerian public.

He described the development as part of what he considers suspicious activities emerging as the country moves closer to the 2027 elections.

Atiku also cautioned Nigerians against being distracted by what he described as attempts to damage his reputation as political activities gather momentum.

He maintained that he remained focused on his presidential campaign and his stated objective of providing what he described as credible leadership and practical solutions to Nigeria’s challenges.

The incident has therefore raised two major questions: who authorised the mysterious payment, and how did the sender obtain details of Atiku’s private account?

Until the investigation provides answers, Atiku’s camp says the unexpected deposit should not be viewed as a campaign contribution but as a matter requiring urgent clarification, particularly given the former vice president’s political status and the approaching 2027 elections.
