Nollywood actress Bimbo Thomas has revealed the personal and professional reasons behind her deliberate shift away from thug characters following her breakout performance in Funke Akindele’s hit film Omo Ghetto.
Speaking candidly in a recent conversation with media personality Chude Jideonwo, Thomas described her choice as a strategic move to prevent being limited to one type of role in the Nigerian film industry.
“Yes, I did stop,” Thomas confirmed. “As a thespian, I genuinely wanted to demonstrate my range and explore different facets of my craft beyond what God enabled through Funke Akindele’s platform. In our industry, actors frequently face typecasting, and I understood I had greater potential than being confined to a single character type.”
However, Thomas acknowledged that the timing of her decision may have been premature. “Reflecting on it now, that choice perhaps wasn’t ideal because I hadn’t yet solidified my position in the industry. But I also worried that becoming too identified with that persona would make it harder to branch out later. Had I been producing my own content at that stage, the outcome might have been different.”
The decision came with significant consequences. “That choice definitely slowed my momentum,” she admitted. “Then I became a mother and needed to prioritize my child. Fortunately, endorsement deals came through, which provided some stability. Otherwise, the situation would have been considerably more challenging. I genuinely paid a price—I turned down roles, lost income opportunities, and even saw some relationships fade.”
Thomas gained substantial recognition after portraying a street-smart character in Omo Ghetto, the Funke Akindele-produced film that later spawned the highly successful sequel Omo Ghetto The Saga. The original movie became one of Nigeria’s most commercially successful and culturally significant films, catapulting Thomas into the spotlight while simultaneously associating her strongly with that particular character archetype.
