Human rights activist, Aisha Yesufu, has called out supporters of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, accusing them of launching coordinated attacks on Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate, Peter Obi, on social media.
Yesufu made the allegation in a post on her X handle on Tuesday evening, urging the former vice president to rein in his loyalists.
The BringBackOurGirls co-convener said she had also become a target of the attacks, adding that she expected better conduct given her past working relationship with Atiku within the same political party.
“An appeal to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar to call his supporters to order. They have been on a rampage on social media attacking supporters of Mr Peter Obi. I have been one of their targets,” she wrote.
She called for political decency and sportsmanship among opposition supporters, insisting that energy should instead be channelled toward defeating the All Progressives Congress (APC) and President Bola Tinubu ahead of 2027.
Yesufu Won’t Tour With Obi In 2027, Shifts Focus To Vote Protection
In a separate video shared on her X account, Yesufu disclosed that she would not be crisscrossing the country with Obi during the 2027 campaign the way she did in 2023.
Looking back at her role in the last election cycle, she said her main goal then was to help Nigerians see that Obi’s candidacy wasn’t rooted in ethnicity or religion, and that the effort paid off, convincing many who initially doubted his chances.
This time around, she said her priority would be ensuring that Nigerians backing Obi are properly mobilised and that their votes are protected from the polling unit all the way through collation.
She urged supporters to build structures at polling units ahead of election day to help coordinate monitoring of voting and result collation, and advised voters to understand the result-recording process to guard against errors or manipulation.
“Your vote that you voted, it must be entered. You must see it manually entered. Follow it. Escort your vote from your polling unit to the ward collation centre,” she said.
Yesufu clarified that stepping back from nationwide travel doesn’t mean abandoning the campaign. She said she would still show up when needed, while focusing more on the groundwork required to secure votes, noting that many young Nigerians are already contributing through mobilisation, photography, content production, and other support roles.
