Media personality Toke Makinwa has advised women to prioritise emotional maturity over pride when choosing a life partner, stressing that a man’s behaviour after an argument often reveals the strength of his character.
In a message shared on her Instagram Story, Makinwa urged women to pay close attention to how their partners handle conflict, noting that healthy relationships are built on empathy, communication and a willingness to resolve disagreements.
According to her, a suitable partner is one who refuses to let arguments create emotional distance. Instead, he should be willing to reach out after a disagreement, check on his partner’s well-being and make genuine efforts to mend the relationship.
She added that qualities such as understanding, accountability and the ability to apologise are far more important than protecting one’s ego.
Makinwa maintained that a man who listens, admits his mistakes and works to resolve misunderstandings is better prepared for marriage than someone who withdraws or avoids responsibility whenever conflict arises.
Sharing her thoughts, she wrote: “Marry the man who calls you after an argument just to make sure you’re okay. Not the one who leaves you alone with your tears. Choose the man who stays when things get hard and wants to understand you, not defeat you. A man who can pause, hold you, and say, ‘I’m sorry,’ because your relationship matters more to him than his ego.”
