Media entrepreneur Chude Jideonwo has revealed that he is living with Tourette syndrome, a neurological condition characterised by involuntary movements and sounds known as tics.
In an interview with BBC News Africa, Jideonwo spoke candidly about the challenges of the disorder and the stigma surrounding it, particularly in Africa where awareness remains limited.
He explained that Tourette syndrome can create a feeling of losing control over one’s body, as it triggers sudden physical and vocal expressions. Although there is no cure, the condition can be managed through therapy and, in some cases, medication.
Jideonwo disclosed that when he was first diagnosed, his doctor advised him to keep the condition private to avoid public judgment. However, he said the experience highlighted why many people are reluctant to speak openly about it.
The 41-year-old noted that he began experiencing symptoms in his late twenties and has since developed coping strategies. According to him, managing the condition often involves intense mental effort to suppress tics, especially in public settings. At other times, he finds that openly acknowledging it helps reduce embarrassment and encourages understanding from others.
He also criticised how Tourette syndrome is often misrepresented in Nigerian films, where individuals with the condition are sometimes portrayed as possessed or abnormal, reinforcing harmful stereotypes.
Reflecting on a recent incident at the 2026 BAFTA Film Awards involving activist John Davidson, Jideonwo said the episode underscored the need for greater awareness and sensitivity.
He added that seeing global pop star Billie Eilish speak openly about her own experience with Tourette syndrome inspired him to do the same. Jideonwo said he now uses his platform, including his writing and public appearances, to promote understanding and support for those living with the condition.
