Media personality Daddy Freeze has explained why he left the service of songs held in honour of late Nollywood actor Alex Ekubo, criticizing the nature of the musical performances at the event.
Alex Ekubo passed away on May 11, 2026, at the age of 40 after a private battle with metastatic kidney cancer, according to his family.
Speaking during an Instagram Live session, Daddy Freeze expressed dissatisfaction with the atmosphere created during the memorial service, particularly when gospel singer Mercy Chinwo took the stage. He argued that the occasion, which was meant to be solemn and reflective, gradually turned into what he described as a concert-like event.
According to him, memorial services and funerals should feature calm, comforting songs that help mourners reflect on the life of the deceased, rather than energetic performances. He maintained that softer worship songs and traditional hymns would have been more appropriate for the occasion.
Daddy Freeze also questioned the decision to have several guest artists lead worship sessions during the event, insisting that hymns are better suited for such ceremonies because they preserve the reverent atmosphere expected at funeral gatherings.
Explaining his decision to leave, he said that once Mercy Chinwo began her performance, he felt the tone of the event had shifted away from what he believed a service of songs should represent.
“Mercy Chinwo climbed the pulpit and turned the place into a concert. At that point, I got up and left. People are talking about me not following the dress code, but doesn’t Mercy Chinwo have soft songs? Do you understand what a funeral is? The kind of music that should be played at a funeral is soft music. They should have sung hymns. I would have been more moved if I had heard hymns,” he said.
