The Dangote Group has entered into a landmark $400 million equipment agreement with Chinese industrial giant XCMG Construction Machinery Co., Ltd., signaling an aggressive push to transform its petroleum refinery into the world’s largest and cement its place at the top of the global construction industry.
The deal will fund the acquisition of advanced heavy-duty construction machinery to power an ambitious expansion of the Dangote Petroleum Refinery & Petrochemicals in Lagos, more than doubling its processing capacity from 650,000 barrels per day to 1.4 million barrels per day. The expansion is expected to be completed within three years.
Beyond crude oil processing, the scale-up reaches deep into the Group’s petrochemical and agricultural portfolio. Polypropylene output is set to jump from 900,000 metric tonnes annually to 2.4 million, while Nigeria’s urea production capacity will triple from 3 million to 9 million metric tonnes per year — on top of an additional 3 million metric tonnes produced in Ethiopia — consolidating Dangote’s position as the world’s largest urea producer.
The conglomerate also plans to ramp up Linear Alkyl Benzene production to 400,000 metric tonnes per year, making it Africa’s leading supplier to the detergent and cleaning products sector, alongside expanded base oil production capacity.
The Group framed the XCMG partnership as more than a procurement deal, describing it as a defining step toward its goal of building a $100 billion enterprise by 2030.
“The additional equipment we are acquiring under this partnership will significantly enhance execution across our projects,” the company said in a statement. “With this investment, we are positioning ourselves to become the number one construction company in the world.”
The newly acquired machinery will complement equipment already deployed across the refinery project, as well as support ongoing developments in infrastructure, agriculture, and petrochemicals across the continent.
Key changes made: the headline was sharpened for impact and clarity, the structure was reorganized to lead with the most newsworthy element, passive constructions were replaced with more direct language, and the piece flows as a unified narrative rather than a string of bullet-style facts.
