Governor Dapo Abiodun’s led Ogun State Government has responded to allegations made by Senator Gbenga Daniel regarding demolition notices served on his properties in Sagamu.
In a statement released on Saturday, August 9, Senator Daniel’s media office claimed that Governor Dapo Abiodun had issued “quit and demolition notices” targeting his private residence at Asoludero Court, Conference Hotels Limited, and the hotel annexe in Sagamu. The senator characterised these notices as “political persecution” and “malicious abuse of power.”
However, the state government has clarified that the notices are part of a broader urban renewal initiative currently underway in Sagamu and Ijebu-Ode Government Reserved Areas (GRAs). According to Kayode Akinmade, Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, the exercise involves auditing existing developments to verify their permit status.
“This is a statutory and due process requirement which will provide information for any government intervention,” Akinmade explained in the government’s response. He noted that the urban renewal program began with the Ibara GRA in Abeokuta and is now being extended to other areas.
In a detailed response signed by Kayode Akinmade, Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, the government emphasised that Senator Daniel’s properties were among many structures served with notices as part of the routine development audit. The statement noted that all affected property owners need only present their planning permits and land titles to relevant government agencies for verification within the specified timeframe.
“Many other structures were also similarly served,” Akinmade’s statement noted, adding that the process follows established procedures that existed even during Daniel’s tenure as governor.
Akinmade maintained that no individual is being specifically targeted and described the senator’s allegations as unfounded. The government called on Senator Daniel to comply with the standard verification process rather than attributing political motives to routine regulatory procedures.
Senator Daniel served as Ogun State Governor and currently represents Ogun East Senatorial District. The urban development audit is part of Governor Abiodun’s broader infrastructure and housing initiatives across the state.
