Dapo Abiodun ,Ogun State Governor received a notably subdued reception on Friday during the burial ceremony of Chief Mrs. Lucia Onabanjo in Ijebu-Ode, as attendees responded to his address with minimal acknowledgment.
The funeral, held for the widow of Ogun State’s first civilian governor, Chief Bisi Onabanjo, attracted prominent political figures including former Governors Chief Olusegun Osoba and his wife Derinsola Osoba, Senator Otunba Gbenga Daniel, Senator Ibikunle Amosun and his wife, and former Deputy Governor of Osun State, Senator Iyiola Omisore. Mrs. Otedola, former First Lady of Lagos State and mother of businessman Femi Otedola, was also among the distinguished guests, alongside several former deputy governors and senators.
The atmosphere shifted noticeably when Senator Otunba Gbenga Daniel arrived, receiving warm applause both outside and inside the church premises. The contrast in reception between the two political figures was apparent to observers at the ceremony.
The timing of the event follows recent speculation about Governor Abiodun’s political future, with some quarters suggesting a possible Senate bid. Critics have questioned recent public endorsements as being driven by political appointees and government associates rather than organic grassroots support.
The ceremony brought together members of Ogun State’s political establishment across party lines and generations, reflecting the Onabanjo family’s significant place in the state’s political history.
As Governor Abiodun’s current term approaches its conclusion, the reception at this widely-attended public event has drawn commentary from political observers about voter sentiment in the Ijebu region, traditionally an important constituency in Ogun State politics.
At the time of publication, the governor’s office had not issued any statement regarding the event.
