The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has dismissed reports suggesting that it froze all bank accounts belonging to the Osun State Government, clarifying that only one account linked to an ongoing investigation was temporarily restricted.
The anti-graft agency explained that the action was part of its routine investigative process and did not affect the state’s entire banking operations.
Speaking during an interview on Arise News on Thursday, the EFCC’s Director of Public Affairs, Wilson Uwujaren, said the commission imposed a temporary restriction on a single government account after detecting suspicious financial transactions.
According to him, the account in question is the only one currently under investigation, stressing that reports claiming all Osun State government accounts were frozen are false.
Uwujaren explained that the commission has the legal authority to place temporary restrictions on accounts whenever suspicious financial activities are discovered during an investigation.
He said the restriction followed observations made by investigators over the past week, adding that the measure was necessary to preserve evidence while the probe continues.
“EFCC placed a temporary restriction on one Osun State government account after observing suspicious activities in the past week. This does not mean all Osun State accounts are frozen, only the targeted one. EFCC has the power to issue such temporary restrictions,” Uwujaren stated.
The clarification comes amid public concern and speculation over reports that the Osun State Government’s finances had been completely shut down by the anti-corruption agency.
The EFCC maintained that its action is limited to the specific account under investigation and should not be interpreted as a blanket freeze on all government accounts in the state.
The commission reaffirmed its commitment to carrying out investigations within the limits of the law while ensuring due process is followed in all financial crime cases.
