Former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello has officially announced his candidacy for the Kogi Central Senatorial seat in the 2027 elections, potentially setting up a showdown with current Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan while simultaneously battling corruption charges.
Bello made his political intentions known during a visit to the palace of the Ohinoyi of Ebiraland, where he addressed traditional rulers, religious leaders, and political stakeholders from the senatorial district.
“I accept to run for the Senate in 2027,” Bello told the assembled crowd, responding to what he described as calls from supporters urging him to seek the legislative seat.
The announcement drew significant political attention, with Kogi State Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo and numerous community leaders and party officials attending the event.
Bello, who governed Kogi State from 2016 to 2024 before handing power to his successor, now aims to represent Kogi Central—a seat currently held by Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan, who secured victory in the 2023 elections. His entry is expected to significantly alter the political landscape in the district.
However, Bello’s senate ambitions unfold against the backdrop of serious legal challenges. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is prosecuting him alongside Umar Shuaibu Oricha and Abdulsalami Hudu on 16 counts related to criminal breach of trust and money laundering.
The charges involve an alleged ₦110.4 billion in financial misconduct during his governorship. The case, currently before the Federal Capital Territory High Court in Abuja, has been postponed until 2026.
Bello’s declaration demonstrates his intention to remain active in political life despite the ongoing prosecution, positioning the 2027 Kogi Central senatorial race as one to watch closely.
